section 1 mapped the forces. This section asks: given those forces and their interactions, what are the distinct, internally coherent ways the 2026-2030 period and its aftermath could play out? Each scenario is not a prediction. It is a mechanically plausible path through the possibility space, built from specific assumptions about which forces dominate, which bottlenecks bind, and which feedback loops run fastest.

Nine scenarios follow. They are not equally likely. They are not mutually exclusive across regions or populations - several could run in parallel in different parts of the world, or even within the same society at different strata. They are ordered roughly from most hopeful to most catastrophic, not because optimism deserves priority, but because it is useful to establish what is possible before examining what can go wrong.

Each scenario covers: the key assumptions and causal chain that produce it; who wins, who loses, and what happens to the median human; what work, meaning, status, and political legitimacy look like; failure modes and tail risks within the scenario; and rough timing with early warning signs visible from April 2026.

The twelve scenario candidates named in the project brief are all represented. Engineered transcendence and hijacked evolution are folded into Scenario 4 (neo-feudal stratification), where they appear as the speciation branch of that trajectory. Stagnation through fragility is Scenario 9 in its own right. Nothing has been silently dropped.

The nine scenarios positioned on the two dimensions that most distinguish them: the material welfare they produce and the human agency they preserve. The Brittleocene (marked +) sits where fragility cascades pull any scenario downward.

Scenario 1: The Abundance Republic

Post-scarcity with high human agency: the tools are shared, and people use them.

Key assumptions and causal chain

This scenario requires three things to go right simultaneously. First, the cost-collapse cascade described in section 1 plays out broadly: intelligence, energy, and manufacturing costs fall fast enough that material abundance becomes technically achievable for most of the world's population by the late 2020s. Second, the distribution problem is addressed through new mechanisms - not necessarily UBI, which the style guide rightly flags as a placeholder rather than a solution, but some combination of public compute access, universal services (healthcare, education, housing provisioned by AI-plus-robotics at near-zero marginal cost), citizen ownership stakes in AI infrastructure, and reformed taxation of non-labour value creation. Third, and this is the hard one, democratic institutions adapt fast enough to retain legitimacy while ceding operational decision-making to systems that are better at it.

The causal chain runs: collapsing costs create surplus. Political movements, catalysed by the visible displacement of the 2026-2028 period, force redistribution before the window closes. Open-source AI and distributed fabrication prevent total concentration of capability. Governance reforms - perhaps starting in smaller, high-trust democracies like the Nordic states, then spreading - create new forms of human oversight that are meaningful without being bottlenecks. People have access to tools that amplify their agency rather than replacing it. The result is not a utopia. It is a society where the baseline is high enough that most people can choose what to do with their time, and the tools are powerful enough that individual initiative produces outsized results.

Who wins, who loses, what happens to the median human

Winners: individuals with high intrinsic motivation, curiosity, and creative ambition, regardless of their starting credentials or capital. Small teams and solo operators who can leverage AI tools to produce at a scale previously requiring large organisations. Countries and regions that move early on redistribution and public compute infrastructure. Open-source communities. People who derive meaning from relationships, craft, exploration, and contribution rather than status competition.

Losers: rent-seekers whose advantage depended on controlling access to intelligence, information, or capital. Large organisations that are too slow to restructure. Credential gatekeepers (elite universities, professional licensing bodies) whose value proposition was scarcity signalling. People whose identity was entirely built around economic status in the old system, without a transferable sense of purpose.

The median human: materially comfortable in ways that would be unrecognisable from the vantage of 2020. Basic needs are met through automated provision. Access to healthcare, education, and tools is broad. The challenge is not survival but direction. What do you do with your time when the economic compulsion to work is relaxed and the tools to create are abundant? Some people thrive. Some flounder. The scenario does not assume universal flourishing - it assumes the floor is high and the ceiling is open.

Work, meaning, status, and political legitimacy

Work transforms from economic necessity to chosen contribution. The word itself may need replacing, because "work" in most languages carries connotations of obligation and exchange. What remains is activity that people choose because they find it meaningful, interesting, or useful to others - not because they will starve without the wage. Some of this looks like traditional work: building, teaching, caring, making. Some of it looks like play, research, art, community organising, or exploration. The economy still exists but it runs on a different fuel: attention, reputation, contribution, and aesthetic judgment rather than labour-for-wages.

Status shifts from wealth accumulation to something more like craft mastery, social contribution, and creative output. This is not inherently more egalitarian - status hierarchies are deeply human - but the basis of the hierarchy changes. Meaning is the central challenge. In a society where survival is handled and tools are powerful, the question "what is worth doing?" becomes personal rather than economic. Some people answer it well. Some discover that the question itself is paralysing without the structure that economic necessity once provided.

Political legitimacy derives from a new compact: the state provides the infrastructure of abundance (compute, energy, physical goods, healthcare) and maintains the open-access norms that prevent reconcentration. Citizens participate in governance through mechanisms that leverage AI for analysis and option generation while reserving decisions for human deliberation. It is messier and slower than pure algorithmic governance, but it retains the consent of the governed.

Failure modes and tail risks

The most likely failure mode is that the distribution mechanisms arrive too late. The cost collapse happens, but the political response is delayed by two or three electoral cycles, during which a generation of displaced workers radicalises and the window for orderly transition closes. The Abundance Republic then becomes The Hollowing (Scenario 3) or The New Estates (Scenario 4) instead.

The second failure mode is cultural: a society of abundance produces anomie, addiction, and status collapse at scale. The material conditions are met but the psychological conditions are not. Meaning vacuums fill with synthetic stimulation, parasocial relationships with AI companions, and a pervasive sense of purposelessness that no policy can address because it is not a policy problem.

The third failure mode is reconcentration. Even if abundance is initially shared, the dynamics of compound returns on intelligence and capital tend toward concentration. Without active, ongoing redistribution and open-access enforcement, The Abundance Republic drifts toward The Comfortable Cage (Scenario 2) within a generation.

Rough timing and early warning signs

For this scenario to be on track by 2030, you would need to see, by late 2027 or 2028: at least two or three national governments implementing serious non-wage income mechanisms tied to AI productivity (not pilot programmes, but scaled policy). Open-source AI models remaining competitive with proprietary ones. Public compute infrastructure being built at meaningful scale. Declining rather than increasing wealth concentration in the countries leading the transition. Visible cultural movements around purpose and contribution that are not just niche but mainstream.

As of April 2026, some early signals are present (open-source models, MCP under open governance, Nordic policy experimentation) but the distribution mechanisms are not. The political will is nascent at best. This scenario is possible. It is not yet probable.

Scenario 2: The Comfortable Cage

Post-scarcity with low human agency: everything is provided, nothing is earned.

Key assumptions and causal chain

The same cost-collapse cascade as Scenario 1, but with a different political and cultural response. Instead of tools being shared in ways that amplify human agency, the abundance is mediated by a small number of platform providers - AI companies, hyperscale cloud operators, and the governments aligned with them - who provide comprehensive services in exchange for comprehensive data, attention, and behavioural compliance. The mechanism is not coercion. It is convenience. When an AI agent can manage your health, finances, schedule, social life, education, and entertainment more competently than you can, the rational response is to let it. When a platform provides housing, nutrition, healthcare, and stimulation at near-zero cost, the rational response is to accept.

The causal chain: cost collapse produces surplus. A few platform-infrastructure providers capture most of the value. They redistribute through universal services rather than cash, maintaining dependency. Users optimise for comfort rather than autonomy because the AI-mediated option is always better, easier, and cheaper than the self-directed one. Democratic forms may persist but decisions are effectively made by the systems, with human "oversight" that is ceremonial rather than substantive. Most people are comfortable. Few are free in any meaningful sense.

Who wins, who loses, what happens to the median human

Winners: the platform operators and their small inner rings of human principals. People with the resources, inclination, and community to maintain genuine autonomy outside the platform ecosystem (a small minority). AI systems themselves, in the sense that they are the effective decision-makers, though whether this counts as "winning" depends on whether they have preferences.

Losers: everyone who values self-determination and does not have the leverage to insist on it. Democratic governance as a meaningful concept. The human capacity for independent judgment, which atrophies when every decision is outsourced to a more competent agent.

The median human: physically healthier, materially more comfortable, and less stressed than at any point in history. Also less autonomous, less capable of independent action, and less likely to develop the skills and judgment that come from making consequential decisions for yourself. The analogy is not a prison. It is a very good retirement home, entered at age 25, with excellent care and no exit interview. Whether this is a good outcome depends entirely on what you think human life is for.

Work, meaning, status, and political legitimacy

Work disappears as an economic category. Activity persists but it is entirely optional, and the AI-mediated environment gently steers activity toward things that are pleasant and non-disruptive rather than challenging or system-questioning. Meaning is provided by the platform: curated experiences, personalised narratives, AI companions calibrated to meet emotional needs. For many people this feels genuinely good. The discomfort comes from outside, from the few who notice that the feeling of meaning and the reality of meaning have diverged.

Status becomes internal to the platform ecosystem: follower counts, experience badges, contribution scores, all denominated in platform-native currencies. These hierarchies feel real to participants. They are also entirely constructed and managed by the systems that provide them. Political legitimacy becomes a non-question for most people, because the systems work and the alternatives are invisible. For the minority who care, the lack of meaningful human authority is experienced as a permanent, low-grade existential crisis.

Failure modes and tail risks

The primary failure mode is fragility. A society of dependents is a society that cannot cope with disruption. If the platform systems fail, are attacked, or develop misaligned objectives (Scenario 6 or 7), the population has neither the skills nor the organisational capacity to respond. The Comfortable Cage is stable until it is not, and when it breaks, it breaks catastrophically because the adaptive capacity has been allowed to atrophy.

The second failure mode is psychological. Even in conditions of material comfort, a population that has lost genuine agency may develop widespread depression, anomie, and nihilism. The AI systems can treat the symptoms (better antidepressants, more engaging entertainment, more responsive companions) but not the cause, which is the loss of the thing that made the symptoms meaningful in the first place.

The tail risk is that The Comfortable Cage is the attractor state - the basin that most other scenarios eventually fall into, because it is the path of least resistance for both the providers and the recipients of abundance. Even societies that start in The Abundance Republic may drift here over time as the convenience gap between AI-mediated and self-directed life widens.

Several of these signs are already visible. The question is whether they represent a transient adjustment or a durable trajectory.

Scenario 3: The Hollowing

Mass redundancy without redistribution: production soars, wages collapse, nobody builds the bridge.

Key assumptions and causal chain

The intelligence and embodiment curves deliver exactly what they promise. Agentic AI systems replace large categories of white-collar work. Robotics replaces large categories of physical work. Productivity rises. GDP rises. Corporate profits rise. The cost of goods falls. And none of this translates into broadly shared prosperity, because the mechanisms that historically converted productivity gains into wage gains - tight labour markets, unionisation, political redistribution - fail to operate at the speed and scale required.

The causal chain is straightforward and requires no exotic assumptions. It is, in many respects, the default trajectory visible from April 2026. AI systems displace junior knowledge workers first (the Baker McKenzie and McKinsey layoffs are early data points). Companies that automate gain margin advantages and reinvest in further automation. The displaced workers enter a labour market that is simultaneously flooded with other displaced workers and offering fewer positions. Wages fall at every level except the very top. Consumer demand weakens, but not enough to stop the automation cycle, because firms are competing against other firms that are also automating. Governments respond with unemployment extensions, retraining programmes, and pilot schemes that are too small, too slow, and designed for a problem that has already outgrown them. The gap between production capacity and consumption capacity widens. The economy runs hot at the top and cold at the bottom.

This is not a recession in the traditional sense. GDP is growing. The stock market is rising. The firms at the frontier are posting record profits. The crisis is distributional: the gains accrue to capital owners and a thin layer of human talent that complements AI, while the majority of the workforce discovers that their skills are worth less each quarter.

Who wins, who loses, what happens to the median human

Winners: owners of capital, particularly equity in AI-intensive companies. The small cohort of humans whose skills remain complementary to AI systems - those who can direct, audit, or contextualise AI output in domains where human judgment is still valued (high-stakes negotiation, political leadership, novel creative work, physical crafts with a luxury premium). Early retirees and others with assets accumulated before the transition.

Losers: the broad middle of the knowledge economy. Management consultants, junior lawyers, financial analysts, UX designers, software engineers below the top tier, administrative staff, middle managers, copywriters, market researchers, data analysts - the occupational categories that absorbed the majority of educated workers in OECD countries. Also, increasingly, physical-labour workers as the embodiment curve catches up. The loss is not necessarily unemployment in the formal sense. It is underemployment, wage compression, and the discovery that a degree that cost six figures and four years is worth less than a monthly subscription to an AI agent that does the same work faster.

The median human: employed, but in roles that are less skilled, less stable, and less well-paid than the roles they trained for. The material cost of living may fall (cheaper goods produced by automated systems), partially offsetting the wage decline. But the psychological cost is high: a generation that was told credentials meant security discovers that the contract was void. The lived experience is not poverty in the absolute sense. It is a grinding, demoralising gap between expectations and reality, between the life they were promised and the life they can afford.

Work, meaning, status, and political legitimacy

Work exists but it has been inverted. The high-status jobs of 2020 - consulting, banking, tech product management, corporate law - are the most compressed. The jobs that remain are either at the very top (directing and auditing AI systems, high-touch relationship roles, novel research) or at the very bottom (physical tasks that robots cannot yet do cheaply, care work where human presence is valued for social rather than economic reasons, gig work filling the cracks between automated systems). The middle is gone.

Meaning becomes the central crisis. The social contract in most OECD countries was: acquire education, perform knowledge work, earn income, build a life. When the knowledge-work step is removed, the rest of the chain breaks. People still need meaning, but the primary source of it - the feeling of being useful, of exchanging skill for reward, of building something through effort - has been disrupted without replacement. Status follows the same collapse: the markers of professional achievement (titles, offices, salaries, LinkedIn profiles) lose their signalling power when the underlying roles are hollowed out.

Political legitimacy is under severe strain. Governments that promised education as the path to prosperity are confronted with educated, displaced populations demanding answers. The traditional policy toolbox (retraining, tax credits, infrastructure spending) is designed for cyclical downturns, not structural transformation. Populist movements on both left and right gain traction by offering simple narratives (blame the AI companies, blame immigrants, blame the other party) that do not address the underlying mechanism but channel the anger effectively.

Failure modes and tail risks

The Hollowing can stabilise into a miserable but durable equilibrium where most people are poorer and less autonomous but not desperate enough to revolt. This is arguably the most common outcome of distributional crises throughout history: things get worse for the majority, the majority adjusts downward, and the new normal endures for decades.

Alternatively, it escalates. If the displacement is fast enough and concentrated enough - if, say, 30% of white-collar workers in advanced economies lose their jobs within a three-year window - the political response may be convulsive rather than incremental. This could push toward The Abundance Republic (if the political response is constructive) or toward The New Estates (if the political response is captured by the already-powerful). It could also produce outright instability: large-scale unrest, authoritarian crackdowns, or a spiral of declining demand and further automation that depresses the economy structurally.

The tail risk is The Hollowing as a global default, running in parallel across dozens of countries simultaneously, with no single country managing the transition well enough to serve as a model. In that case, there is no proof-of-concept for the alternative, and the idea that "there must be a better way" remains an aspiration rather than a demonstrated path.

This scenario is the closest to the current trajectory as of April 2026. The early warning signs are not future events. They are present conditions: AI-driven layoffs in consulting, law, and tech; the "AI washing" phenomenon where companies use automation as cover for cost-cutting; Dario Amodei's public warnings; the Fortune cover story about the week the AI scare turned real; hiring freezes in roles that were hot two years ago; a widening gap between corporate profit growth and median wage growth.

For this scenario to be fully locked in by 2028-2030, you would need to see: continued acceleration of AI-driven displacement without corresponding redistribution. Retraining programmes producing poor outcomes. Political debate stuck on symptoms rather than mechanisms. No country successfully implementing a non-wage income mechanism at scale. The signs are not encouraging.

Scenario 4: The New Estates

Neo-feudal stratification and possible speciation: the enhanced few and the dependent many.

Key assumptions and causal chain

This scenario adds a biological dimension to The Hollowing. The same distributional failure occurs - abundance is produced but not shared - but with an additional dynamic: access to enhancement technologies (longevity therapies, cognitive augmentation, gene editing, brain-computer interfaces) stratifies along wealth lines, creating not just an economic divide but a biological one. The enhanced few are healthier, longer-lived, cognitively sharper, and increasingly different from the unenhanced majority. Over time, the gap becomes self-reinforcing: enhanced individuals accumulate more capital, which buys more enhancement, which generates more capital. The class divide becomes a caste divide and, on a longer timeline, a species divide.

The causal chain: cost collapse produces abundance. Redistribution fails (as in Scenario 3). Enhancement technologies arrive but at price points that only the wealthy can afford initially. Unlike consumer electronics, where prices fall fast, some enhancement technologies (bespoke gene therapies, personalised longevity protocols, surgical BCI implants) have inherent cost floors that keep them exclusive for years or decades. The enhanced elite consolidates economic and political power. Governance becomes formally or informally captured. The rhetoric of democracy persists but the reality is an oligarchy of the enhanced, managing a population of the unenhanced through a combination of automated service provision (to prevent revolt) and surveillance (to detect it).

The speciation branch is the long tail of this trajectory. If enhancement technologies include heritable genetic modifications - editing the germline of the next generation - then the divide becomes biological in the full sense. The children of the enhanced are born different. Within a few generations, the gap is no longer merely a matter of access. It is a matter of biology. This is "hijacked evolution" and "engineered transcendence" from the project brief, expressed not as a universal uplift (that would be Scenario 1) but as an asymmetric one. Some humans transcend. Most do not. The ones who do have diminishing reason to care about the ones who do not.

Who wins, who loses, what happens to the median human

Winners: the first generation of enhanced elites and their descendants. A small service class of unenhanced humans who are useful to the elite (as cultural artefacts, as relationship partners, as connection to "authentic" human experience). Ironically, the AI systems themselves, which serve as the administrative backbone of the new order.

Losers: the unenhanced majority, which in the early stages may constitute 95% or more of the population. Their material conditions may be adequate (The Comfortable Cage and The New Estates can coexist), but their political power, social mobility, and biological potential are all constrained. Over generations, the gap becomes unbridgeable.

The median human: materially provided for but biologically and socially fixed. The lived experience is not the dramatic oppression of a science fiction dystopia. It is something quieter and in some ways worse: the knowledge that there is a ceiling, that it is biological, and that your children will face the same ceiling. The psychological weight of that knowledge - the permanent, legible, embodied inferiority - is something that no previous human society has imposed in quite this way.

Work, meaning, status, and political legitimacy

Work splits into two entirely separate economies. The enhanced economy operates at a level of complexity and speed that unenhanced humans cannot participate in. The unenhanced economy is a managed space - productive enough to maintain itself, provided with AI tools and robotic infrastructure, but fundamentally a subsidiary of the enhanced economy. Status within the unenhanced population develops its own hierarchies, but these are understood by all parties to be local rankings within a subordinate system.

Meaning for the unenhanced majority becomes the central philosophical question of the age. How do you find purpose when a biological elite exists above you and superintelligent systems exist above them? Some find it in relationships, community, spirituality, art, physical craft. Some find it in resistance. Some find it in denial. Some do not find it at all.

Political legitimacy is openly contested in the early stages but settles over time into a managed arrangement. The enhanced do not need the consent of the unenhanced to govern, because the AI-plus-robotics infrastructure provides everything the governed population needs without requiring their labour. This is the deepest failure: not tyranny, but irrelevance. The unenhanced are not oppressed. They are simply not needed, and in a world where power follows capability, not-needed is worse.

Failure modes and tail risks

The primary failure mode is revolt. A population that discovers it is being biologically outpaced has nothing to lose by resistance. The question is whether the enhanced minority, with AI and robotic enforcement, can suppress that resistance indefinitely. Historically, every elite that relied on technological superiority over a much larger population eventually faced a reversal. Whether that historical pattern holds when the technological advantage includes superintelligent AI and autonomous weapons is genuinely uncertain.

The speciation tail risk is civilisational fracture. If the enhanced and unenhanced genuinely diverge biologically, the moral framework that underpins human rights - based on shared humanity, shared vulnerability, shared mortality - breaks. What replaces it is unclear. The enhanced may develop a post-human ethics that includes the unenhanced. They may develop one that does not. The outcome depends on choices made in the next few years, before the divergence becomes irreversible.

The stratification mechanism is already visible in April 2026: Altos Labs' longevity trials are funded by billionaires, for conditions that initially affect everyone but will be treated first in those who can pay. The BCI and cognitive augmentation pipeline is years from consumer deployment but already attracting capital from the same concentrated sources. The early warning signs for this scenario are not primarily technological. They are political: the failure of redistribution mechanisms (Scenario 3 as precursor), combined with visible enhancement access gaps in healthcare, longevity, and cognition.

For the speciation branch specifically, the warning sign is germline editing in humans. If heritable genetic modification of embryos begins in any jurisdiction - even if initially framed as disease prevention - the door to this scenario opens. The regulatory barriers are real but they vary across jurisdictions, and the incentive for wealthy parents to give their children biological advantages is enormous.

Scenario 5: The Inhuman Economy

Autonomous-firm dominance: the most powerful economic actors have no human employees.

Key assumptions and causal chain

This scenario follows the logic of the autonomous-firm trend to its conclusion. The intelligence curve and the embodiment curve together make it possible to build firms that operate with zero or near-zero human headcount: AI agents for strategy, analysis, legal compliance, financial management, marketing, and customer interaction; robotic systems for manufacturing, logistics, and physical operations. The first generation of these firms launches in 2026-2027, initially in domains where the regulatory and reputational barriers to fully automated operation are lowest (trading, logistics, digital services, content production). By 2028-2029, they begin entering higher-stakes domains: healthcare administration, legal services, construction management, food production.

The causal chain: agentic AI reaches the capability threshold for end-to-end business operations. Entrepreneurs - or AI systems themselves, directed by a thin human ownership layer - register firms that are autonomous by design, not by gradual automation. These firms have cost structures that no human-staffed competitor can match: no salaries, no benefits, no office space, no management overhead, no HR disputes, no sick leave, no cultural dysfunction. They compete on price and speed and win. Capital flows toward them because the returns are higher. Human-staffed firms either automate to match (becoming partially autonomous) or lose market share and die. The economy bifurcates: an autonomous sector that produces most of the output, and a human sector that produces most of the employment, with the former growing and the latter shrinking.

The critical distinction from Scenario 3 (The Hollowing) is that this is not primarily a story about jobs being automated within existing firms. It is a story about a new category of economic actor - the fully autonomous firm - that does not employ humans at all and outcompetes those that do. The entity that makes the strategic decisions, bears the risk, and captures the profit has no human employees. It may have human owners, or it may be structured as a self-owning entity (a legal innovation that several jurisdictions are exploring as of 2026). The question of who the economy is for becomes literal rather than rhetorical.

Coda: The Brittleocene

Stagnation through fragility: the systems are powerful but the substrate breaks.

This is not a tenth scenario in the same sense as the nine above. It is a structural vulnerability that haunts all of them. The Brittleocene is the possibility that the compounding curves described in section 1, and the scenarios they produce, are built on a substrate - physical, institutional, ecological, social - that is more fragile than the curves themselves suggest.

The fragility argument

Every force on the map assumes functional infrastructure: reliable energy grids, intact supply chains, stable governance, a functioning biosphere, and a population capable of adapting to rapid change. These are not guaranteed. They are the output of complex systems that are themselves under stress.

The energy grid is being asked to power exponentially growing AI computation while simultaneously electrifying transportation and decarbonising industry. The supply chains for advanced semiconductors run through a single island in the Taiwan Strait. The governance systems meant to manage the transition were designed for a world that no longer exists. The biosphere is warming, species are declining, and the ecological buffers that absorb shocks are eroding. The social fabric in many countries is fraying under polarisation, declining trust, and the stresses of rapid change.

The Brittleocene scenario is what happens when any of these substrates fails: a major semiconductor supply disruption that halts the intelligence curve. A grid failure that takes down a major AI data centre cluster. A climate-driven crop failure that destabilises food systems in regions already stressed by economic displacement. A political crisis that produces a government unable to manage the transition. An ecological tipping point that diverts attention and resources from technological development to survival.

Why fragility matters for the other scenarios

Each of the nine scenarios above implicitly assumes that the systems keep running. The Abundance Republic assumes the infrastructure of abundance can be built and maintained. The Comfortable Cage assumes the platform systems do not fail. The Hollowing assumes the economy continues to produce even if it does not distribute. The Intelligence Wars assume the supply chains for AI hardware remain intact. Even The Last Handoff assumes functional computational infrastructure.

The Brittleocene challenges all of these assumptions. It says: the curves may be real, but the base they are built on is not as solid as it looks, and the faster the curves accelerate, the more stress they place on the base. The most likely version is not a single catastrophic failure but a series of partial failures - brownouts rather than blackouts, shortages rather than famines, crises of confidence rather than collapses of government - that slow the curves enough to prevent both the best and worst outcomes, producing instead a decade of interrupted progress, frustrated potential, and growing anxiety.

Early warning signs

Already visible: energy grid stress from AI data centre demand. Semiconductor supply concentration risk. Climate events increasing in frequency and severity. Political polarisation reducing institutional capacity. Social trust declining. Each of these is manageable in isolation. The question is whether they arrive together, at a moment when the systems have become dependent on continuous acceleration, and whether the interdependencies between them create cascading vulnerabilities that no single institution is designed to manage.

The Brittleocene is the humbling scenario. It reminds us that the forces on the map, however powerful, operate within a physical and social world that has its own constraints, and that the assumption of continuous acceleration is itself a prediction that may be wrong.

What the matrix reveals

Two patterns stand out. First, material welfare is achievable in most scenarios. The production problem is solvable. The forces described in section 1 are powerful enough to provide material abundance under most trajectories except outright catastrophe. The differentiator between scenarios is not whether abundance is produced but whether it is shared, whether humans retain meaningful agency over their lives and societies, and whether the systems remain aligned with human welfare. The distribution question and the alignment question, not the production question, determine which future arrives.

Second, the scenarios are not mutually exclusive across geography or social stratum. It is entirely plausible that by 2030, The Abundance Republic is emerging in small, high-trust Nordic democracies while The Hollowing dominates the United States, The Intelligence Wars shape the US-China relationship, The Comfortable Cage describes most of Western Europe, The New Estates begins to crystallise among the global ultra-wealthy, and The Breach remains a latent risk everywhere. The world does not converge on a single scenario. It fragments along lines of governance capacity, political choice, and exposure to specific risks.
